MARCH 2003

The Another Girl at Play web site has been a huge topic this past month. It's been written up in several different magazines, it's up for a major award and I'll be giving an interview on it on MP3.com shortly. It's also created an amazing community of women, women who have begun to pursue their own creative passions and women who have begun to think about it.

With all the talk, the amazing feedback and wonderful support, the site is a huge success - yet it hasn't made a dime. With the exception of the donation fund for Austin, I don't think it ever will.

Money, it seems, is therefore not always a determination of success. I think this is important to note because as a culture, we can sometimes define our success by the paycheque and what's in the bank rather than personal accomplishments.

The artists on the Another Girl at Play site were chosen to participate because they were successful, however, I have no idea who much any of them make. They could be scraping by or making thousands. Whatever the case, it doesn't matter because their success comes from who they are and what they've accomplished rather than their bank statements. Their words of wisdom, their journeys and their personalities have lead me, and countless others, to see them as a success. The fact that they're happy, working and doing what they love is more inspiring to me than any six-figure income.

It seems that the artists would agree.

When I asked the artists what was their definition of success, not one of them mentioned money or fame. Instead they gave answers that had to do with how they felt, rather than how the outside world viewed them. I'd like to leave you with a few of their definitions of success, in hopes that if fear of not being successful is holding you back from pursuing your dream, you'll be able to re-invent your own definition of success and see how easy it is to achieve.

"Being happy by keeping busy and living from doing exactly what I want to be doing." Claire Robertson

"Success is when you know you reached a goal you set your heart on, no matter how large or small that goal is. It doesn't have to be a million dollars in the bank, or appearing on the front cover of Writer's Digest. It can be a small check for a short article, or being a finalist in one of Writer's Digest's contests. Every time you feel you've achieved something, that's success." Ruby Bayan

"My definition of success changes as my business grows, the more I achieve the more I want to achieve. I think my summing up of success would be doing what you love and being appreciated for it." Sarah Lugg

"Being happy with what you've accomplished, and feeling you can still offer more." Jenny hart

"Being able to live the life that I want." Martine Locke.
