FEBRUARY 2003

Just over a year ago, I had an idea brewing around in my head where I would ask several female artists that I knew questions about their business. Questions such as how they started, what they learned and what they hoped to accomplish. I would then post their stories on a web site to perhaps inspire others to follow their own creative path.

I knew there was no other web site out there like the one I wanted to create and I knew there was a need for these women's stories to be heard. Yet I was afraid to act on my idea.

I was afraid that I would be the only one interested in such a thing, that if I asked people they would laugh and turn me down, that if they did say yes no one would care enough to read their profiles. For months I thought about this idea and believed in my heart that it was something worthwhile, but held back because of fear.

When I shared this idea with my good friend Andrea Scher, she told me to go for it. She said, "If you ask, all they can do is say no."

I thought if people said no, I couldn't be any worse off - so I asked. I asked all the artists that I knew and the amazing thing? Not one of them turned me down. In fact, they were all truly excited about the project and started recommending people they knew to join the site.

A few weeks after sending off questions to the artists, I received their answers back, put them on a web site and the Another Girl at Play site was born.

One year later, we have gone from a handful of successful women artists to twenty-three (and counting!). We have gone from several hundred hits per month to over seven thousand each day. We've gone from being a web site, to being a community. A community of women and artists who prove that success is possible if only you try.

I would never have imagined the success that this site has back in the days when fear clouded my view. I'm thankful that I became brave enough to put this together, and even more thankful for those who have participated by either being on the site, or reading it. It is because of all of us - both artists and readers - that we've been able to create something amazing.

Here's to us. Happy Anniversary.
