JANUARY 2003Last night with nothing but a guitar and her voice, Martine Locke (an Another Girl at Play Artist) rocked the house with her music, her humour, and her personality. This was the second time I had seen her play live and the second time I was completely floored. Not only is it amazing how much energy she puts into her music and performances but also how she can fill the arena she's playing in with just her voice and music. Just before she performed her song "Fly" (which is also the title of her new album), she explained to the audience the meaning behind it. She had been part of a successful duo called "The Velvet Janes" but after moving to America without her signing partner, she faced the decision of having to make a solo album. She said she felt as though she was standing at the edge of the cliff, ready to fly off and be a solo artist yet she resisted because she was afraid to leap. This astonished me. Her, afraid? Afraid to sing alone? When you see her perform, it seems so natural that you wonder how she could do anything but. It never dawned on me that she was at some point, afraid to do what she does. But I've come to realize that people like Martine and the women of Another Girl at Play aren't where they are because they lack fear; but because they try in spite of it. Erma Bombeck once said:
And it's so true; it's one thing to have a dream, it's another to do it. Hopefully, what the women of Another Girl at Play have shown is that it is possible to make your dreams come true - even if you're scared. All it takes that first step which continues into an amazing journey. There will always be fear - it's simply human nature - but hopefully what always won't be there, will be giving in to it. |
